Klagenfurt

Klagenfurt, the charming capital of the Carinthia region in southern Austria, is a city that seamlessly combines a rich history with contemporary vibrancy. The city’s history dates back to the 12th century, and remnants of its medieval past are evident in the well-preserved architecture of the historic district. The landmark Lindwurm statue, symbolising a dragon, prominently stands in the central square, Alter Platz, and is a testament to Klagenfurt’s legendary founding tale.

Klagenfurt is a cultural hub with museums, galleries, and theatres. The City Gallery, Robert Musil Literature Museum, the Carinthian Museum of Modern Art (MMKK) and the kärnten.museum are just a few of the venues that invite visitors with a diverse range of exhibits. During the symposium, the traditional Festival of German-Language Literature is also taking place, culminating in the award of the Ingeborg Bachmann prize, named after the famous Austrian writer who was born in Klagenfurt.

The city’s borders the Lake Wörthersee, making it a popular holiday destination. The lake along with the surrounding mountains provides a scenic backdrop for various recreational activities, such as open-air events and performances.
